The University of Alaska was founded in 1917 and has five campuses throughout the state. The university boasts a low student to faculty ratio of just eleven to one, and is also one of the few universities in the country which has the designation as a sea, land and space grant university.

The Petroleum Engineering department, also known as the College of Engineering and Mines (or UAF PETE), is located near the biggest oil field in the North American continent, and has a special focus on Arctic oil & gas development given its close proximity to that region. Placement rates for the university’s graduates average well over 98 percent.

The department offers Bachelors & Masters of Science degrees in Petroleum Engineering. There is a Petroleum Development Laboratory for research into advanced oil & gas techniques, funded both by government and private companies.

UAF PETE also runs an innovative Petroleum Engineering Challenge through which students can form teams to address challenging industry problems. Based on the solution provided prizes are awarded, as well as peer and industry recognition noted which can advance future career prospects.

There is a well-established eLearning and Distance Education program. Through the use of the university’s online Blackboard training platform, students can take a variety of courses in a number of disciplines as well as online degrees in defined majors. This is part of its outreach program to rural communities in the state to provide affordable university education to deserving students.
