The University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country having been founded in 1787, and currently offers over 200 degrees of specialization. It maintains a student faculty ratio of just fourteen to one, and is regularly ranked among the top twenty public universities in America’s Best Colleges report by U.S. News & World Report.

In 2016 it ranked a respectable #160 in the Forbes list of best value colleges.

In addition to its Pittsburgh campus, the university has four other campuses throughout the state. The university has its own online learning portal that offers both online courses and graduate degrees in certain academic disciplines. The school has a well established reputation for research excellence with the institution currently ranked 5th in funding for research & development by the American government.

The Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh was set up in 1910. This gives it the distinction of being the first such department created for petroleum engineering in the world. The department currently offers Master of Science degrees in Petroleum Engineering, as well as dual degrees which allow students to obtain Master of Science degrees in both Petroleum & Chemical engineering. These degrees are with thesis option with a Master of Science Engineer degree awarded to those students seeking a non thesis option.

There are more than 20 laboratories and research facilities to back up a strong field of industry research projects in which students can specialize in various fields of interest. Additionally, there are opportunities to study abroad in over 75 countries.
